Winemaker Tasting with Caleb Leisure

Caleb Leisure returns to minimo for an exciting winemaker tasting! Caleb’s in town (all the way from Cloverdale) in conjunction with Wine From Here, a fair that’s quickly becoming a premier showcase for American natural winemakers. Hosted by Subject to Change Wine Co. & Stagiaire Wine, Wine From Here takes place in Richmond on April 14th.

Featuring:
Mother Sees 2022 ~ Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, 2-day maceration

Oakland Positivity Party / Action

We love Oakland. As a small business that just celebrated our 8th year, we can attest that this year has been particularly challenging. There’s been a lot of negative press about our city, news of beloved businesses closing, and countless stories on social media about the impact of crime. But there’s so much to love about this city, and so many independent businesses that really need support right now.

In this spirit, we’re holding an Oakland Positivity Party on Sunday from 1-3pm that is really a Call to Action: our goal is to gather together and write posts for social media that cast a positive light on Oakland. Let’s flood Nextdoor and X with positivity about good experiences in Oakland, or post on Facebook or Instagram about your favorite places to drink, dine, or shop locally. Share your favorite destinations among our beautiful parks and neighborhoods; give a shout-out to a recent discovery or a long-standing establishment that makes you love living here. Not on social media? Write a letter to the editor of the SF Chronicle.

Bring your own device. We’ll provide the free snacks! We’ll have our usual weekend tasting flight available, as well as wines by the glass and non-alcoholic beverage options.

Winemaker Tasting with Louis-Antoine Luyt + Casa de Kei Pop-Up

Join us for an extra special winemaker tasting PLUS the return of Casa de Kei! Louis-Antoine Luyt is a French, Burgundy-trained winemaker who has played a huge role in fostering a terroir-driven natural wine scene in Chile. When living in Chile years ago, he realized the ancient vines tended by independent farmers were typically undervalued (so the fruit was sold off in bulk), or used for personal winemaking. Working with these farmers, Luyt created new value for their fruit by introducing their “pipeño” wines to the international market. “Pipeño” is the Chilean term for rustic, light, peasant-style wines. Each bottling features a different farmer and site. We’ll feature a skin contact Pipeño, plus wines from two other Luyt projects in Chile: a light red of País, and a chilled red blend of Carmenere, Pinot Noir, Pais & Merlot. We’re thrilled to welcome Louis-Antoine to the shop for the first time on Thursday, October 19th, 5-7pm! Pair your tasting with delicious food: Keisuke Akabori will be popping up with the exceptionally creative dishes of Casa de Kei. Stay tuned for a menu!

Winemaker Tasting with Faith Armstrong of Onward!

Faith Armstrong has a long history with minimo. We poured her Malvasia Bianca Pét-Nat at our opening party in 2015, and hosted her for a winemaker event in 2017. We’re excited to welcome Faith back to minimo for a winemaker tasting on Saturday, September 23rd, from 1-4pm.

Faith grew up on a small island in British Columbia, and Onward is named for the trusty little boat that she traveled to school in. She launched her label in 2009, with a natural approach to winemaking that honors the history and authenticity of the grape and the vineyard site. Sourcing fruit primarily from Mendocino, Suisun Valley, and Contra Costa, Onward focuses on single vineyard, site-driven wines. Faith recently launched a second series (with label art by friends & family) that focuses on fun, fresh, lighthearted wines. She’ll pour a selection from both labels!

Winemaker Tasting with Kristie Tacey of Tessier Winery

East Bay winemaker Kristie Tacey has a background in microbiology–she even worked on the Human Genome Project. Yet she discovered winemaking was her true calling, and in 2009 she launched Tessier, which reflects her passion for the art and science of winemaking. Influenced by the Loire Valley and Burgundy, her minimal intervention wines express a purity of fruit balanced with fresh acidity. She’s also a music lover, so each of her wines is paired with a song to convey its personality and create an experience. (You can hear her on KXSF community radio, where she’s a part of the Supper Sessions collective.) Join us for a winemaker tasting with Kristie on Thursday, June 8th, from 5-7pm. Winemaker Tasting with Tony Coturri + Pop-Up Bites by Jane!

Tony Coturri has been making California natural wines for 59 years. If you ask Tony “why make natural wine?” he’ll just tell you that’s how his family always did it. In 1901 his grandfather Enrico immigrated to San Francisco, where he worked as a cooper. He taught the traditional winemaking techniques of his Italian village to his son Harry “Red,” who in turn taught them to his sons Phil and Tony. On Sonoma Mountain, Tony carried on the tradition for decades, farming and sourcing organically grown fruit and making wine without cultured yeast, additives, or SO2 at any stage. His wines are unapologetically bold California reds that evoke the old world. They’re pure and rustic, yet structured and age-worthy. By sharing winery space and wisdom, Tony has also helped numerous natural winemakers get their start, including minimo favorites Ashanta, Caleb Leisure, Absentee Winery, and Etteilla Wines. For good reason, many call him the Godfather of California Natural Wine. We’re thrilled to welcome Tony back to the shop for a winemaker tasting!

Winemaker Tasting with Emily Fernwood of Osa Major!

Put Emily Fernwood on your radar! Emily’s an up-and-coming Bay Area natural winemaker who launched her own label, Osa Major, in 2020 after working harvest gigs all over the world. She aims to explore a lighter, brighter side of California winemaking, working with growers in lesser known regions who have a deep commitment to their vineyards. We’ve been fans of Emily’s wines from the beginning, and we’re excited to welcome her to the shop for a tasting of new releases!

Featuring:

Sémillon ‘Gold In The Hills’ Sierra Foothills 2021

Tempranillo Rosado Clements Hills 2021

Carignan Old Vine Lodi 2020
