Fire Relief Fundraiser with Belden Barns

Belden Barns is a wine country gem perched at 1,000 feet on Sonoma Mountain. Nate and Lauren Belden fell in love with this site, which has a long history of farming and hospitality dating to the late 1800’s. This magical setting was once a stagecoach stop, and houses Victorian farm buildings and 100-year-old Monterey Cypress trees. Since 2005 they have been re-developing the vineyard and property back to its historic standards, and have launched a farmstead for small-scale, sustainable agriculture. They make limited-production wines from their own vineyards that exemplify elegance, structure, and balance.

We’re so grateful that Belden Barns survived the NorCal fires without damage, especially given the immense devastation in surrounding areas. This Saturday, November 11th, we’re hosting a special winemaker tasting featuring Belden Barns, and 100% of net proceeds from the tasting will benefit the Redwood Credit Union Fire Relief Fund. Our event is part of a larger fundraising effort by Nate and Lauren, for which they have secured a private donor who is matching donations dollar for dollar up to $100k. That means the funds we raise at the tasting will be matched for double the impact! We’ll feature four Belden Barns wines for $20. The tasting will be available from 12-7pm, with Nate and Lauren at the shop from 3-6pm, sharing stories about their wines and their unique site on Sonoma Mountain.

CANCELLED - Winemaker Tasting with Tony Coturri

Harvest started early this year! Tony's receiving grapes this weekend, and had to postpone. We look forward to having him in the shop post harvest!

Tony Coturri is a legend in the world of natural winemaking, but if you ask him “why make natural wine?” he’ll just tell you that’s how his family always did it. In 1901 his grandfather Enrico immigrated to San Francisco, where he worked as a cooper. He taught the traditional winemaking techniques of his Italian village to his son Harry “Red”, who in turn taught them to his sons Phil and Tony. Red & sons founded Coturri Winery in 1979. Bucking all trends of the times, the Coturris have always farmed their Sonoma Mountain property with no chemical pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. (Tony now sources from an organic vineyard in Mendocino, too.) Their winemaking sees no cultured yeast, no additives, no SO2 at any stage, and employs only neutral wood vessels for aging wines. It’s that simple: just make wine like your grandfather did. 

Tony is now revered as a visionary, and his terroir-driven wines showcase the purity of California’s fruit in a way that’s classic and revolutionary all at once. Come meet Tony, hear what it was like to be a natural producer in California before it was cool, and taste some spectacular wines.

Baia Pasta is an artisanal pasta-making company located in our very own Jack London district. Owners Renato Sardo & Dario Barbone met through Renato’s leadership of Slow Food International. These Italian transplants are making delicious, authentic dry pasta using only the best organic grains and old-fashioned drying processes. 

We’re teaming up with Baia Pasta on Thursday, August 3rd, to do a Italianate pop-up! We’ll  offer a couple of Italian wines by the glass, for $10 each, and with every glass of wine, you’ll get an aperitivo serving of pasta. Dario will be dishing up the pasta and sharing what makes Baia so unique--and there will be some packages of pasta available for purchase in case you get hooked.

Winemaker Tasting with Bryan Harrington of Harrington Wines

Bryan Harrington is one of San Francisco’s most exciting urban natural winemakers. When he started in 2002, the focus was on Pinot Noir, sourcing sustainable old-vine fruit from some of California’s most prestigious sites. But since then the concept has steadily broadened to encompass other varietals, many obscure and unusual, along with some creative blends. He seeks out and sources from heritage vineyards around the state, some well known and some forgotten. From an industrial facility in Butchertown, where Bryan collaborates each year with friends and wine enthusiasts, now flow arcane gems like Trousseau, Mission, and Marzemino.

Bryan will join us Saturday, May 6th, from 2-5pm to pour three of his wines, including the just released Mission--California’s first cultivated grape--from Somers Vineyard in Lodi.

Local Spotlight: INCONNU

Laura Brennan Bissell is a local superstar. After working in various aspects of wine for years, she has launched her own label INCONNU to great acclaim. Laura focuses on minimal-intervention wines inspired by the French tradition of vin de soif, or "wine of thirst.” These wines are joyfully accessible, and they’re also a reflection of the purity and freshness that can come from sustainably farmed vineyards, spontaneous fermentation, low sulfur, and impeccable restraint in the winemaking process.

Today we’re featuring her Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Rosé of Merlot. All three are made from fruit sourced in Los Carneros in Sonoma County, and aged in neutral barrels. And all three exemplify why Laura’s wines are so beloved.

Tin City Cider Co. in Paso Robles is a collaboration between winemakers Andrew Jones (Field Recordings), Mikey Giugni (Scar of the Sea) and Curt Schalchlin (Sans Liege). Together they produce some of the most tasty and unique California ciders.

Mikey will be joining us Wednesday, March 29th, from 5:00-7:00pm to pour some new releases from Tin City.  We’ll be featuring a standout apple cider co-fermented with Chardonnay that's utterly delicious; an apple cider fermented and aged in Old Bourbon Casks for 4 months, and dry hopped in barrel with citrus rind; and their bone dry classic blend of west coast apples, dry hopped, barrel fermented and perfect straight out of the can.

And, we're adding to the lineup Mikey's Scar of the Sea Dry Hopped Cider, a blend of Newton Pippin, Arkansas Black and Jonathan apples from Santa Cruz and  Paso Robles!

Winemaker Tasting with Mike Roth of Lo-Fi

“Wine is like life and music. Both are filled with resonance, distortion, simplicity, modesty, intimacy and ingenious integrity of the natural processes.” So say Mike Roth & Craig Winchester, the longtime friends who created Lo-Fi in Santa Barbara County. Their goal is to make honest, handcrafted, food-friendly wines for everyday drinking. Lo-Fi’s winemaking philosophy--”nothing added, nothing taken away”--is exactly what we celebrate at minimo. For them it means native yeasts, whole-cluster fermentation, minimal sulfur additions, neutral barrels for aging. The results are fresh and delicious.

Come meet Mike Roth at minimo on March 11th!  He’ll be pouring three of Lo-Fi’s newly released 2015 wines: sparkling rosé of Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

Did you know Treasure Island is a hotbed of natural winemaking? Yep, that little island in the middle of San Francisco Bay--which you thought was just the midpoint of the Bay Bridge--is a veritable fermentation lab.  We’ve organized a special tasting with 3 favorite Treasure Island natural winemakers who will each pour two wines. These wineries don’t have tasting rooms on the island, so this is your chance to meet local superstars and taste their limited production wines!

Joining us will be: Noel Diaz of Purity Wines, whose commitment to transparency is evident both in the beautiful fruit of his wines and the winemaking process he details meticulously on the back of his labels; John Donoghue of Thee & Thou, who is making superb California blends; and Ben Herod of Oro en Paz (meaning “gold in peace” from the old San Francisco motto), a collaboration of three friends making elegant single vineyard, single varietal wines.

Republic of Georgia Tasting

The Republic of Georgia is often considered to be the birthplace of viticulture and winemaking, dating back 8000 years. The earliest form of winemaking there involves macerating and aging in clay vessels called Qvevri, which are buried underground. In essence, these are the first “natural” wines, in that there is no use of chemicals, foreign yeasts, or filtration. This practice is so vital to understanding early winemaking that it has been added to UNESCO’s “List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” Thankfully, there are a number of wineries in Georgia who continue to make wine in this traditional manner. On Wednesday, December 14th, we’ll be pouring 4 Qvevri-style wines (1 white without skin contact, 2 “amber” or orange wines, and 1 red), all newly arrived to the U.S., all amazing examples of what makes these wines so unique. Joining us is one of our favorite people, Eric Danch from Blue Danube Wine Company, whose knowledge of Georgian wines never ceases to amaze us!

From southeastern Georgia, we’ll be featuring two wines from the Shavnabada Monastery -- the 2004 Mtsvane which spent 6 months fermented on the skins and then 11 years in Qvevri, and the 2009 Saperavi, which spent 6 years in Qvevri. Grown and produced by monks, bottled by hand, sealed with beeswax, and blessed! From Eastern Georgia, we’ll be pouring a Kisi, one of the rarest white grapes, from the winery Doqi, which has 6 months of skin contact. And from high up in the hills of the Asureti Valley, we’ll be pouring the native white varietal Chinuri from Gotsa winery.

Winemaker Tasting with Faith Armstrong

Faith Armstrong’s wines--both the Onward and Farmstrong labels--have been shop favorites since the day we opened--we even poured her sparkling Malvasia Bianca at our opening party! We’re excited to have Faith visit our shop on Saturday to share her wines with you!

Faith grew up on a small island in British Columbia, and Onward is named for the trusty little boat that was her family’s primary mode of transportation. She now lives in Napa Valley, sourcing sustainably farmed grapes primarily from Mendocino and Suisun Valley and making “terroir forward” wines that express their vineyard sites with great character and integrity.  While the Onward label represents her delicious single-varietal bottlings, the Farmstrong label is home to the creative blends that are her artisanal interpretation of California table wines.

Extreme Italy with Holly Corr from Oliver McCrum

Italy has some of the world’s most famous wine regions, but the country also makes many captivating wines in lesser known regions. On Wednesday night Holly Corr, from one of our favorite Italian Importers Oliver McCrum, will join us to explore some of Italy’s outermost regions. These wines come from the extreme edges of Italy, are obscure local varietals, and are all wonderful discoveries!

From high above the Mediterranean sea in western Liguria, near the French border, we’ll pour a Rossese di Dolceacqua, a rare local grape, by the tiny estate Ka' Manciné. This lighter style red wine has fresh red fruits with herbal notes of wild sage, thyme, and lavender. Next, over to Calabria in the extreme south of Italy, we’ll pour a Gaglioppo from Sergio Arcurì. It’s reminiscent of a Nebbiolo, with earthy fruit, citrus zest, and warm spice. We’ll finish in Puglia, with a blend of local grapes Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera from Castel di Salve Armecolo. The owner of Castel di Salve describes Negroamaro as a ‘wild horse’ because it’s difficult to vinify. This one is a clear success, with dark fruits, tobacco, plum, and a vibrant peppery finish!

Winemaker Tasting with Chris Christensen of Bodkin Wines

Winemaker Chris Christensen is redefining Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing what this varietal is capable of delivering in California. From sparkling, to still, to skin-fermented, to dessert wine, Chris does it all with Sauvignon Blanc. Chris sources his fruit from small and family owned vineyards, to ensure he’s working with people who are driven by pride and a commitment to their land. His winemaking follows a “less is more” philosophy, which for him means producing lower alcohol wines with bright acidity, minimal use of sulfur, and limited new oak. 

We’re delighted to have Chris at Oakland Crush on Saturday, September 17th, pouring 3 different Sauvignon Blancs, followed by an awesome Zinfandel. We’ll start with a sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, America's first, racy and crisp. Next, a still Sauvignon Blanc that’s light, yet packed with citrus flavor. Followed by a Sauvignon Blanc orange wine (!) spontaneously fermented on the skins. This wine has great texture and exhibits a medley of lemon, almonds, and spice. Finally, we’ll finish with a delightful Zin, bursting with fresh fruits and spice.

Winemaker Tasting with Anna Marie dos Remedios of Idle Hour Winery

In celebration of Oakland Pride, Anna Marie dos Remedios of Idle Hour Winery will be joining us on Saturday from 2:00-5:00 for a special winemaker’s tasting!  

Winemaker Anna Marie and her partner, Deb Payne, are the proprietors of Idle Hour Winery, located in Oakhurst just outside Yosemite National Park. They specialize in single-vineyard designated wines from organic or sustainably farmed vineyards, and practice minimal intervention winemaking using native yeasts, gravity flow and other traditional methods.  

Anna Marie is a former journalist (she owned a community newspaper in Hollister) turned winemaker, who honed her practice with mentor Josh Jensen at Calera Wine Company. Adjacent to the winery, Deb & Anna Marie also own and operate a lovely inn and wine bar called the Queen’s Inn By The River, on the Fresno River in Oakhurst. 

For the tasting, we are being treated to all reserve wines, limited in release, and some not even available yet! Anna Marie’s wines have a purity and strength to them, bold with fresh fruit, always well balanced with impressive structure. Come join us for a tasting of reserve Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, and Petite Sirah from Clarksburg, and reserve Syrah from Madera County!

From Los Angeles, flavor genius Freya Estreller will be pouring both versions of her Ludlow Spritz! Think Venetian aperitivo in a bottle, think summer pool party, think a day at the spa, think ridiculously delicious. There’s nothing like this. 

Ludlow Spritz is an all-natural fizzy cocktail in a bottle made with California sparkling wine infused with real fruit, citrus and herbs. Grapefruit-Elderflower is spiked with Aperol and elderflower liqueur, with fresh grapefruit, cucumber & lemon. Golden Apple-Bartlett Pear is flavored with the bitter gentian liqueur Suze plus pear, apple, cucumber & mint.

Debuting Greek wines with DNS Wines

We’re bringing Greek wines to the shop, and we want you to taste them first!  This Wednesday tasting will feature four Greek wines, and we’ll have Hollis Grant from DNS Wines here to help share what makes Greek wines so unique. DNS Wines specializes in growers who adhere to sustainable farming practices and meticulous, minimal-intervention standards for winemaking. Their Greek portfolio is a partnership with Dionysi Grevenitis Selections, an ardent champion of Greek wines who represents an impressive selection of artisanal, small-production winemakers.

We’ll start in Santorini--known for its distinctive white wines due to volcanic soils and unique growing conditions--with an indigenous varietal called Aidani from cult winery Hatzidakis. This wine has exotic fruits and citrus with great texture and weight. Next over to Thessaly, nestled in the foothills of Mount Olympus, where we’ll explore Limniona, an indigenous varietal resurrected by Domaine Zafeirakis. We’ll begin with their delicious rosé of Limniona, featuring juicy cranberry and wild herbal notes, and follow with Zafeirakis’ Limniona red, smooth and fresh with dark fruits and interwoven spices. We’ll finish on the island of Cephalonia, with the Sclavos family who traces its roots back for centuries. This full bodied red wine, named Synodos, is a blend of Mavrodaphne and Vostilidi from 70-100 year old bush vines--meaty, smoky, and savory.

Dan Fishman and Philip Cuadra are winemakers to watch in California’s burgeoning natural wine movement. Both are crafting extremely small-production, expressive, and unique wines. Here at Oakland Crush, we consider it one of our greatest thrills--and responsibilities!--to support talented winemakers and micro-wineries, and to give you the opportunity to discover and support them too.

Dan is the winemaker at Hatton Daniels, where he makes a vibrant Zweigelt from Lodi’s famed Mokelumne Glen vineyard (72 cases), and a richly textured, complex Malvasia Bianca from Contra Costa (54 cases).  

Philip launched his own label, Highlawn Wine Company, where he makes a deeply flavored Albariño from Rorick Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills of Calaveras County (44 cases), and an earthy, cool climate Syrah from Halcón Vineyard, one of the highest elevation vineyards in Mendocino County (24 cases).

Belden Barns, located at 1000-feet elevation on northwest Sonoma Mountain, is a magical property. It has a history of hospitality dating back to the late 1800s, including a dance hall and stagecoach stop, and a farming history of both orchards and dairy. In the 1970s it was vineyard planted, and became one of California’s premiere sources for Pinot Noir grapes. Nate and Lauren Belden acquired the property in 2005, and have been painstakingly re-developing the vineyard and property back to its historic standards, including becoming certified sustainable. While they still sell fruit to some of California’s finest wineries, they have also launched their own Belden Barns label for limited production wines from the estate. 

Belden Barns produces gorgeous wines, and we’re excited to have Nate and Lauren Belden at Oakland Crush on Saturday pouring four of their current releases. You’ll have a chance to taste a standout Sauvignon Blanc, from an obscure clone with Italian origins; a versatile Grüner Veltliner (very few are working with this Austrian varietal in California); and two Pinot Noirs with wonderful flavors influenced by maritime breezes and smaller "mountain" berries -- the first from an old block of Pinot, and the second a very limited bottling from the Serendipity block, which has nine separate clones all picked in one day and fermented whole cluster. Winemaker Tasting with La Clarine Farm

From the art-punk band Half Japanese to the Sierra Foothills … Hank Beckmeyer’s career has taken him through a lot of rule-breaking experiments. He met Caroline Hoel while the band was touring in Europe, and together they started La Clarine Farm in 2001 with a property located at 2600 feet in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. They are leaders in California’s natural wine movement, biodynamic farming, and philosophy of “do nothing” farming inspired by Japanese writer Masanobu Fukuoka. The role of caretaker in the field is much harder work than “do nothing” implies, as Hank will tell you, but the rewards are obvious in the wines they make. 

Sourcing from their own vines and others tended with equal integrity in the Foothills, La Clarine Farms’ unique wines are what you’ll want to drink all summer long. Spontaneously fermented, aged in neutral vessels, with only minimal sulfur added at bottling, these wines are fresh, pure, and lively, with wonderful nuances, and re-define yummy. Today Hank and Caroline will pour four wines that are all new to the shop--including  an Albariño released just last week, and the crazy-hard-to-get Sumu-Kaw Syrah. Come see why they’ve attracted a following as avid as Half Japanese did ...

We’re so fortunate to have Donkey & Goat Winery in the East Bay. They’ve been making natural wines for over a decade--way before “natural” became trendy. In fact, they’ve been listing ingredients on their label since 2004, something few wineries do, and those ingredients are simply stated “grapes and minimal sulphur.”

Owned and operated by Jared & Tracey Brandt, Donkey & Goat sources grapes from sustainably farmed vineyards in the Sierra Nevada, Mendocino and Napa. In the cellar nothing is removed and nothing is added, with the exception of minimal sulphur. They are a model of transparency and honesty, providing extensive information about their practices. And their wines are simply delicious, with great character.

There are so many wonderful things about Scribe Winery: brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani, fourth-generation California farmers; a stunning Sonoma property that’s been vineyard-planted since before Prohibition; vibrant and highly coveted wines. Scribe practices what they call “Forever Wild Farming,” a bio-diverse approach that nurtures the farm’s whole ecosystem and results in especially terroir-driven wines. 

We’re thrilled to have Andrew at Oakland Crush on Wednesday June 29, 5-7pm. He’ll pour four of Scribe’s wines, and we hear he’s bringing snacks from the winery’s garden.

Scribe’s name suggests not only the rich history of the land, but also the importance of keeping its story alive. Come hear the story and taste the wines with us!

Oyster & Wine Pairing with Real Good Fish!

Is there anything more satisfying than slurping down ice-cold oysters with perfectly paired wines at 5pm?  Our friends at Real Good Fish (the community supported fishery that delivers seafood to its members at Oakland Crush) are joining us for a special tasting and oyster pairing!  They’ll be bringing the freshest Marin Miyagi oysters to serve on the half shell to our tasting participants.  Naturally we’ve picked 3 wines that are brilliant with oysters--and all new to the shop--for the evening’s wine tasting flight.

First we have an unusual, sophisticated “methode traditionelle” sparkling wine from Germany’s Nahe appellation, made with Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.  Next, a mineral-driven organic Muscadet infused with notes of lemon, lime and almond. (Muscadet + oysters is like Ernie + Bert.)  Last, a bright Picpoul de Pinet from Languedoc, grown on the banks of a lagoon where oyster beds abound, whose acidity and salinity (picpoul means “lip-smacking”) make it the perfect oyster match!

Cider Tasting with Tilted Shed Ciderworks from Sonoma!

Scott Heath and Ellen Cavalli, both Alameda natives, are cider artists and evangelists of the most delightful sort. Their Tilted Shed Ciderworks, near Sebastopol, was born in 2011 from a mix of experimentation, study, and sheer love. Their farm is planted as a “pomological research station” where they are conducting trials with some 100 varieties of cider apples and perry pears, some exceedingly rare. For Tilted Shed’s beautiful ciders, they harvest and press up to 24 apple varieties each year, all organically grown in Sonoma County.  

Just like the wines we favor here at Oakland Crush, these ciders are made in small batches without any additives or fast-fermentation shortcuts; they are unfined and unfiltered, and use minimal sulfites. As serious students of old-world cider-making Scott and Ellen craft a variety of styles interpreting the traditions of Spain, France, and England, in addition to creating new-world originals like Graviva! with the heirloom Gravenstein eating apple. The results are aromatic, complex ciders with superb structure--some of California’s very finest.

Oakland’s own Drew Huffine and Emily Virgil make fantastic very small-production wines, sourcing fruit from off-the-beaten path vineyards from Mendocino to Santa Ynez. Their wines are setting a new mark for purity in California -- well balanced, bright and low in alcohol, and true expressions of the sustainably farmed sites they come from. 

Drew will be pouring four of Trail Marker Wine Company’s new releases: a crisp and elegant Rosè of Grenache from the organically farmed Eagle Point Ranch vineyard in Mendocino; a Chardonnay with “untamed acidity” from Mendocino Ridge hidden in the wilds of redwood trees; a Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz Mountains that shines with bright red fruits and a lovely earthiness; and finally a light and delicious Zweigelt from a famed Lodi vineyard known for its German and Austrian varietals.

Anya Fernald is a superstar of California agriculture, and a beloved Jack London neighbor. She’s the co-founder and CEO of Belcampo Meat Co., a leader in the movement to produce sustainable meat at larger scale. Belcampo’s innovative, Animal Welfare Approved and USDA-certified program encompasses farm, butchery, shops, and restaurants.  

Belcampo has been headquartered in Jack London since 2011 and will open a restaurant right here on 3rd Street in late 2016/early 2017. (We can’t wait!) Anya’s a champion of sustainable and local food in other ways too--she helped launch Slow Food Nation, founded Oakland’s Eat Real Festival, and has been a regular judge on Food Network’s Iron Chef.

Anya’s also a great cook! Somehow she found the time to write a terrific cookbook called Home Cooked: Essential Recipes for a New Way to Cook. It’s just been published by Ten Speed Press, and we’re delighted to host Anya for a book signing on Wednesday May 18 at Oakland Crush, from 5-7pm.

On Wednesday evenings we also hold our thematic wine tastings. For this special event with Anya, we’ll be pouring a flight of 3 wines that are great matches for cured meats, and featuring a selection of Belcampo’s outstanding charcuterie.

Copies of Home Cooked will be available for purchase, and Anya will be signing them!

Winemaker Tasting with Matthew Rorick of Forlorn Hope

Matthew Rorick is a champion for uncommon varietals, unknown appellations, and projects the majority would deem lost causes. In turn, we are rewarded with beautifully made California wines that are rightfully called “rare creatures,” each with their own unique story and provenance, and gorgeous in their own right. 

“Forlorn Hope” is named for a Dutch term meaning “lost troop,” given to soldiers who believed so strongly in the cause that they volunteered to lead the charge, even when chances of success or survival were slim. Matthew has been leading his own charge, and at Oakland Crush, we can safely say his wines are a big success. We opened the shop with three of his labels, all of which sold out quickly. It’s time to get Matthew’s wines back on our shelves, to give you the opportunity to meet him, and taste his newly released “rare creatures.”

Spanish Wines from Valkyrie Selections

One of the joys of having a wine shop is working with a dedicated, passionate group of importers and distributors who specialize in independently owned, small production wineries that follow sustainable practices.  It’s through these relationships that we discover new gems; learn about the producers, their farming practices, and winemaking methods; and in turn share those wines and stories with you.  

For Wednesday’s tasting, we have a new selection of fantastic Spanish wines, ideal for everyday drinking, from importer Valkyrie Selections. Joining us will be one of our favorite representatives, Emily Kaplan, who will share the stories behind these delicious Spanish wines. 

We’ll pour four wines: a refreshing Albariño from Rias Baixas in Galicia, a lively Getariako Txakolina from Basque country, a juicy Tempranillo from the lunar-landscaped Bardenas Reales Natural Park in Navarra, and a plush Grenache-Tempranillo blend from Montsant in the Priorat region.

Winemaker Tasting with Nicole Walsh of Ser

I had the pleasure of meeting winemaker Nicole Walsh of Ser at “Wines of Danger,” which showcases small-production wineries in California.  The event's name draws attention to the fragility of success for independent small producers in the competitive California market.  Nicole is based in Santa Cruz, and she makes beautiful wines that are true expressions of their varietals and the vineyards from which they are sourced.  In fact, “Ser,” is Spanish for “to be” but also, more deeply, for expressing identity of origin.  

On Wednesday, March 23rd, Nicole will be at Oakland Crush from 5:00-7:00 pouring four of her wines, including the new vintage of her Dry Orange Muscat (we sold out of the 2014 vintage in the first two weeks Oakland Crush was open), a Rosé of Nebbiolo, a gorgeous Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the just-released Cabernet Pfeffer (an extremely rare varietal with less than 12 acres grown in California, sourced from a dry farmed, old vine, organic vineyard in San Benito County). These wines are very limited-production—for example, only 90 cases of the Cabernet Pfeffer were made, and 125 cases of the Dry Muscat.  Come meet Nicole and taste some of her fantastic wines before they sell out!

Andrew Jones, winemaker extraordinaire. Meet the man whose wines we can barely keep in stock. Andrew makes some of the most fun, accessible, delicious, great-value wines in California. His labels have won awards and won you over. He’s coming from Paso Robles to Oakland Crush, just for us.

Andrew’s “day job” is at a vine nursery, where he plans and plants vineyards for growers all over California. These relationships give him access to stellar small lots of fruit—and we become the beneficiaries through his labels Field Recordings, Fiction, and Wonderwall. And Andrew has his hands in a variety of other projects, such as Alloy Wine Works (a.k.a. wine in a can), the Fableist (with winemaker Curt Schalchlin of Sans Liege & Groundwork), and Tin City hard apple cider (also with Curt, and Mikey Giugni of Scar of the Sea). In other words, Andrew is a wine super hero.  

Andrew will be pouring four of his wines on Wednesday evening, March 16th, from 5:00-7:30. None have previously been available at Oakland Crush!

We love cool-climate California wines and Scott Sisemore, proprietor and winemaker of Waxwing, makes some fantastic ones with fruit from vineyards in Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Scott specializes in Pinot Noir, Riesling and Syrah, and the wines show beautiful restraint, balance, and bright acidity. These are limited production wines, with only around 1000 cases total produced per year.  Come join us on Saturday to meet Scott and taste four of his wines!
